History:
Built in 1842 the historic Simmstown Manor has lots to offer. The house was originally built by Harvey McElroy for his daughter, Mariah McElroy Simpson. The original owners were devastated by the Civil War and the property was then sold to John Simms. John Simms had amassed a great amount of wealth prior to the war and unlike many others was able to sustain it during the war and use it to purchase the sizable brick mansion and the surrounding lands. After a few years he owned the 2400 acres surrounding the great house. The Simms family completed a two story wing on the north side of the house and moved in in 1868. The house held many grand parties and entertainments during the Simms’ time and often opened its doors to the most prosperous and socially prominent families around. When John Simms wife, Sarah Celclia Simms, died in 1895 he surveyed his 2400 acres of land and divided it among each of his five surviving children. His youngest child, Mary Simms Smith was given Simmstown as her part of the property divide and her father continued to live with her until his death. Upon Mr. Simms' death Mary kept the house and it was passed through the family until 1983 when Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Kelly Jr the great grandson of Mr. Simms decided to sell the house to the current owner, Mr. Larry Hodge. The house and grounds both went through an extensive renovation with efforts to keep historical aspects in as many ways possible.
Note: The home has security cameras to monitor the driveway, as a safety precaution. (This is required to be disclosed to renters.)

Summary: Amazing property! Beautiful old southern manor which has been maintained true to its heritage. We felt privileged to stay in this beautiful home. The surrounding grounds are meticulously cared for and offer a peaceful, beautiful base for a Kentucky Bourbon Trail trip. We were 11 long-time friends (five couples and one single) gathering in Kentucky for three days. The home and carriage house provided ample room for sleeping, cooking and socializing. There are so many positives about this home and property that it would take much more space than allocated to go into detail. Just know that if you choose to book this property for your visit to Kentucky you will not be disappointed. Additionally, if you are like our group, your breath will be taken away by its beauty and charm! An added benefit is the attentive response by the owner, Larry, to any questions or requests you may have. We did not meet Larry, but did reach out a couple of times via text and phone with questions and he responded in a timely manor. Thank you Larry for a wonderful experience!

Summary: Beautiful historic home that’s been updated but also preserves the history of the house. Was an excellent, comfortable stay for our large group that split between the main house & carriage house. It was an easy drive to distilleries in the area and into Bardstown or Springfield.

Summary: A group of 12 HS friends (couples) from Missouri and Northern KY spent 4 days at Simmstown Manor enjoying bourbon tastings, horse racing at Keeneland and the culinary cuisine of Chef Gwyn. This was the perfect location for all of the activities and the Manor, situated on acres of beautiful rolling bluegrass hills with frolicking horses and gorgeous scenery, could not have been a more fitting setting. The home is period-perfect but with all the necessary amenities that make it an easy place to relax and immerse yourself into the beautiful southern Kentucky charm. We have already decided to return. All of the rooms were lovely and so many charming places to read and cuddle The meals from Chef Gwyn could not be matched- just incredible. Thank you for this getaway gem

Summary: Our family consisted of eight adults arriving from SC, GA, and AL. We all were mesmerized by the Manor located on a quaint farm with retired horses and rolling hills. The home is quite spacious with stunningly decorated rooms. We utilized every room playing games in the front parlor and upstairs sitting room, the men played pool and watched football in the carriage house, and we all strolled outside and sat around the fire pit. The girls' favorite room with the elegant dining room with enormous windows and banquet dining room table. The kitchen was also spacious and an extremely easy place to work. We went to four distilleries, and loved returning to the Manor with the decor of horse champions and bourbon. The bedrooms were comfortable and elegant and all had bathrooms within a few steps of each. We were saturated in KY culture and loved the entire weekend including our sprinkling of snow on the last day.

Summary: We spent a long weekend here with adult family (party of 8) celebrating a 50th birthday on the bourbon trail & Keeneland. The manor seemed a good place to land in between activities. But once we got here, we realized that just staying in at this magnificent property would have been sufficient for an incredible time! The photos don't do this property justice! it is stately, glamorous and elegant but also homely and comfortable. There's so much to do to enjoy Kentucky in just the borders of this property: walks on the grounds, runs on the trails, visit the horses, sit on the deck and sip a coffee watching the sun rise over the fields, cook a gourmet dinner then feast in style in a magnificent dining room, sit and curl up with a book or your friend in the stately drawing room, sip bourbon by the fire pit, sip beer in the games room in front of a huge TV while playing pool, or just sleep in within the confines of a four poster bed. We celebrated in style with a personal chef one night that our host, Larry, helped us organize. Thoroughly recommend this! The hosts couldn't be more gracious and helpful. Check in and check out was a breeze and we felt like their guests who they were striving to keep comfortable (there weren't those obnoxious messages left everywhere about don't do this or that, or don't touch this or that everywhere which you usually find at VRBO's). I certainly hope we can find our way back to this magnificent property in the near future. Thank you for hosting us!!!

Summary: Wonderful home. Historic, yet has all the amenities you need. Very quiet and comfortable. Great place to return to after a day on the trail. Would highly recommend Chef Gwyn. Excellent food, and she will cook about anything you desire. We loved the dog that was on the property. She was alert, and we felt we had a guard at all times. Hosts very helpful and responsive to requests. Will definetly stay again if our bourbon supply runs low!

Summary: Amazing first impression! Photos are accurate but there is so much more to see in person. The house is gorgeous and the renovations are great for modern times while keeping the spirit of the age of the house. The property is kept photo ready. Beautiful sunsets, horses, a mini lake, patios, spiral staircase and more. One critique… It says it sleeps 12 w/ the carriage house, just know the beds are small in the carriage house and the 3rd room does not have a bathroom of convenience. The bedrooms in the main house are large with nice beds and plenty of room to spread out in the many sitting rooms. Large tables for games, a nice bar and fully equipped kitchen. Location is perfect as well for an easy drive to many sites and distilleries. The host goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome. We highly recommend!

Summary: Small group of us 6 couple in total gather annually somewhere with spouses to spend 3-4 days together. This year was Bourbon Trail and this historic home was the perfect place to be before and after the trail. Kitchen was well equipped for throwing together dinner and breakfast along with the long tables for serving and dining. The grill worked well also. We utilized the entire home and refurbished garage area. The house was super hot in the upstairs 2 bedrooms due to the air conditioner needing service and Larry was right on it. They brought us fans to use to pull air from the hall ways into those bedrooms and worked like a charm. I would recommend a fan outside on the porch to keep bugs and flies at bay- very helpful keeping that area comfortable. All in all we love the place, only draw back is that one bedroom doesn't have a bathroom so middle nigh needs to you to go outside to get to the house.
